Serving at Athens

There are many opportunities to serve at Athens Church! Whether you’re a people person or more comfortable behind the scenes, whether you like operating solo or running with a team, and even whether or not you’re an early riser, we’ve got a place for you to help out.

We’re planning for fall! The following information applies to our new schedule when we move to two services August 9, 2026.

Sundays aren’t the only time to get more involved. Join our Landscaping Team, Fix-It Team, CarePortal Team, or check out our partner organizations for upcoming volunteer opportunities in our Kansas City community. Learn more below!

Sunday Morning Teams

Now that we're hosting two worship services every Sunday morning, there will be nearly 80 roles filled by volunteers every week to make sure our services go off without a hitch.

Communion set up & tear down

Arrive 30-45 minutes before service starts and set up the bread and wine at communion stations. Tear down after service. Expect to serve every 2 or 3 weeks. This is a 1-person job, but feel free to sign up as a pair.

Making coffee

Arrive 90 minutes before service starts to brew the coffee for our service. Expect to serve every 2 or 3 weeks. This is a 1-person job, but feel free to sign up as a pair.

Hospitality Team

Greet people at the door before the service, answer questions at the welcome table, keep the coffee & water table stocked with refreshments, or hand out worship folders at the sanctuary door. A great role for anyone with a passion for greeting newcomers! Arrive 30 minutes before service starts to help set up. Members of this team serve about every 3 weeks.

AthensKIDS Classroom

Roles include volunteering in classrooms with infants, walkers, preschoolers, K-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th graders. Arrive 15-30 minutes before service starts. Members of this team serve approximately every 2-4 weeks, during the worship service. Classroom volunteers serve at one service, and attend the other!

AthensKIDS Welcome Desk

Arrive 30 minutes before service starts to serve at the AthensKIDS Welcome Desk as a greeter or running the check-in computer. Members of this team serve every 3 or 4 weeks and miss the first few minutes of the service.

Athens STUDENTS

Twice a month (1st and 3rd Sunday) during the school year, Students volunteers join the middle and high schoolers of Athens for class led by Justin Derks during the 10:15am worship service. Take a turn teaching or just lend your support as a volunteer.

Worship Team

The worship team would love to add additional instrumentalists to the team. The same worship team serves at both services, practice and sound check starts at 7:00am. If you play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums, or another instrument, reach out to Brooke Dorr to set up an audition:

Prayer Team

The Athens Prayer Team is a group of dedicated members working behind the scenes to improve their own prayer lives and that of the church. In addition to praying before the service and with the congregation Sunday mornings (every 2-3 weeks), team members meet throughout the month for times of prayer and spiritual growth.

Production Team

The production team runs tech during the Sunday service – slides and sound. Training is provided but experience with sound equipment and mixing sound, or running ProPresenter, is appreciated. Production team serves at both services, 7:00am call time for practice and sound check before the service. Serve every 4 to 6 weeks.

Parking/ Security Team

Help keep all members and guests safe on Sunday mornings! Two team members arrive 20 minutes before service to help direct traffic in the parking lot. Then, 10 minutes after service starts, they keep an eye on the lobby and each do one walk-through to check the building. Team members serve about once a month and get to play with walkie talkies.

Serving communion

Our communion servers are primarily pastors, elders, deacons, staff, and long-time members.

Reading Scripture

Our weekly scripture reader gets to share God’s Word with the congregation. They also need the confidence required to take us to Gennesaret, Dalmanutha, or Areopagus — or tackle a bit of Aramaic.

Sign up to serve on Sundays!

We would love to add new volunteers to our Sunday morning teams.

CarePortal Response Team

Athens has partnered with the local nonprofit CarePortal over the past few years to meet the tangible needs of those living right around our church. God has called us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and CarePortal gives us a direct avenue to do this very thing! Help fill vetted, urgent needs close to home. Team members can contribute their time, money, or both to help fill needs. Learn more about how it works on the CarePortal website.

Landscaping Team

Calling all gardeners! Help keep the church property looking its best. The Athens landscaping team is an informal group that meets a few times each year to tidy and update the landscaping around the church. If you’re interested in planting plants, raking leaves, pulling weeds, watering, and the like – sign up!

Fix-It Team

If you’re handy around your house, you can be handy around our church! The Fix-It Team is an informal group that the church might ping for assistance before calling in a repairman. If you have experience in maintenance or construction, either professionally or as a DIY-er, we’d love to have you.
